Dante, a black tri-colored, was fearful and aggressive, but with TONS of work he became a wonderful family dog and terrific running partner (even saving me from an attack while out running one night). When Dante passed away in 2009, I didn’t think I would ever be ready to adopt another dog. Then, Bob found a 4-year-old black tri-colored online, and convinced me we should go meet him. It was instant love! We adopted Woody in late 2009, and he remains THE PERFECT DOG. Seriously! He is mellow, loving, obedient and loyal. But with an active (then) 10-year-old son, it became apparent he should have a playmate too. Enter SKYLAR!! We adopted her as an 8-week-old puppy, and she instantly turned our world upside down. Non-stop motion, endless ‘talking’, persistence, high energy and absolutely endearing! Whether it’s a 20-mile run in the mountains with friends (nobody ever gets lost or left behind when Skylar comes along!), playing in mud puddles, working around the house, or shooting hockey pucks, Skylar is there! We often say in our house, Woody is the love, and Skylar is the laughter. We first learned about dog surfing in 2012 when the Surf City Surf Dog folks advertised dog surf lessons on Facebook. I figured it might be fun to see if our little go-getter would enjoy it. (Woody, by the way, does not like getting his paws wet, so surfing was never an option for him, despite his name!) With the help of our awesome Surf City Surf Dog instructor, Skylar rode her very 1st (whitewater) wave all the way to shore. Not only that, once on the surfboard, Skylar suddenly transformed into this mellow, focused pup. We were hooked! (And she peacefully napped the entire afternoon!) We still seek the help of a ‘true surfer’ to help us get Skylar the best rides, but we’re having lots of fun learning about surfing along with her.
