OK! You’ve had good success in calm water and are now ready to introduce you Surf Dog to Dog Beach and the Ocean.
When you get down to the beach, your Surf Dog is probably going to be excited, if not all amped up! Dog Beach is a cacophony of sites, scents and sounds. Your Surf Doggies little brain is going to go into overdrive. Give them a little time to blow off some steam and to explore this new place before you head into the water.
When your ready, put on and secure their CFD (Canine Flotation Device). Leave the surfboard on the beach and head down to the surf. Wade into knee deep water and slowly introduce you Surf Dog to the waves. Make it fun! You’ll want to eventually get to the point where they will want to follow you into the surf. As the small shore break rolls by, you might try sitting or kneeling in the water with your surf dog. You can also try running in the shallow water through the shore break. Try anything that will get them use to the water and all the splashing. Some dogs take right to it and others will take some time.
