When the time came for us to add to our family I researched the O.C Animal Care Center and saw a Queensland Heeler who looked just like our Harry, a Queensland Heeler we lost three months prior. When I met Libby, she was about year old, not spayed, skinny, black tar covered her ear tips, with her tail held tightly between her legs, but she had such a resemblance to my sweet Harry, I could not help but connect with her and fall in love with her as well. When we took Libby home we quickly realized she had quite a mind of her own. It took time for her to socialize with people and other dogs, but living in Huntington Beach we learned the dog beach was the right place for her to mingle and happily run after tennis balls. Libby also loved running into the water and playing in the waves. I had observed the Surf City Dog Competition the year before getting Libby and thought, " I'd like my dog to do that!" Sure enough, as soon as we could, we signed up for dog surfing lessons, which Libby happened to love! We were trilled. We purchased a soft top surfboard and practiced with Libby until she looked like a pro and was able to compete. Libby was not too keen surfing for a crowd at her competition, but once she was in the water and on her surfboard she became brave and eager to get back on her surfboard again and again. Over the years Libby has become extremely comfortable on her surfboard and loves going for rides in the ocean. We try to stay active on the water and help Libby try new things such as kayaking, paddle boarding and of course surfing. It has been an incredible surprise to see Libby grow from a shy rescue dog, to a happy surf dog who loves getting up on her surfboard and riding the waves.
