Part of my neo-natal training included balance and coordination exercises as soon as I could walk! At 8 weeks of age, I jumped on a boogie board in a kiddie pool, and have been surfing ever since! As I grew, so did my interest in chasing critters, which is a no-no for service dogs. So, I had to be released from that position. But since I proved that I could surf pretty well by winning 3rd place at my first surf dog competition, the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge, my role was changed to SURFice dog! I'm still able to help people with disabilities... just in a non traditional way! Paw-abunga! Now, I live a lifestyle of helping others by pawing it forward while raising awareness & funds for human/animal causes. I raised over $51,800 in 2010, and am best known for my inspirational video that went viral on YouTube, "From Service Dog to SURFice dog", which has almost 3 million views, and touched the hearts of people all over the world.Since it's gotten so much exposure, I immediately turned it into a platform to help others on a larger scale by re-directing the attention to additional human and animal causes. I have an initiative called Surfin' for Paws-abilities, and through it I've helped raise awareness and funds for individuals with disabilities, animal shelters, adaptive surfing organizations, K9 cancer, and more. I surf for fun, and usually place in the top three when I enter surf dog contests. My best win was at the 2010 Loews Surf Dog Competition where I won 1st place in the tandem division with my littermate, Kalani. At the 2009 Helen Woodward Surf dog Surf-a-thon, I came in 2nd overall. I won 3rd place in the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge in 2009 and 2010. I've won several other surf dog contests, and have been awarded several top fundraiser awards, a couple top dog awards, and the prestigious AKC Award for Canine Excellence. I'm very involved in the adaptive surfing community of disabled surfers, and often surf tandem with them. I help counterbalance the board, or help reduce apprehension in kids learning to surf. When I surf with them, I experience the true Aloha spirit, and I'm totally stoked! For me, it's what surfing is all about! I received my canine good citizen certificate when I was six months old, and I'm also a certified goal directed therapy dog with Pawsitive Teams, and a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs Incorporated. Much of my therapy work takes place on the beach, but I also work on dry land too! I'm an ambassador for Pay It Forward Day, Association of Amputee Surfers and So Cal H20 Rescue Team. I inspire people to focus on what they CAN do, rather than what they can't, adjust expectations, and to turn disappointment into opportunities.
